Credibility has been on my mind and I flashed back to first couple of years of my HR career when I was in charge of starting a training department. I inherited a trainer who repeatedly dressed inappropriately. Her “see through” pants were so sheer that you could see whatever kind of underwear she was wearing and she would wear shirts that showed off her belly button.

Yes, there was an office Christmas Party and more. It’s a great story that I tell every time I discuss credibility, or lack thereof, in a business setting.

Making Exceptions. Enough is Enough Already!

We make decisions every day, but just because you make decisions it does not necessarily mean that you are good at making them, that you should act upon the decisions you them or that you should even be one making the decision. Decisions are either instinctive or require a more in-depth analysis and make sure you know the difference.

In January, the Wall Street Journal posed the question “Is the Paper Resume Dead?” As it turns out, the answer is “No.” Using information from HR recruiters and managers, as well as tracking sales of high quality paper stock at Staples, the author concluded that a paper resume is still a necessity, especially at places like career fairs.

It’s a confusing time to be in HR and experience the transition from paper resumes to employees who have a social media presence – perhaps even a brand! Employees and job candidates also suffer from the same confusion.

A few weeks ago, week my constant state of being over committed caught up with me and I fell ill. My body was telling me to slow down and I fought it with everything I had, but I lost. The result of what happened was exactly what I needed. You see, I had an ENTIRE day to myself. No one at home. No one at my office door. No electronic device tempting me . . . . it was just what I needed.

Loving Your Limits

It’s very, very easy to see having too much to do in too little time as a source of stress. Believe me, I know. But constraints can also be a source of inspiration, creativity and amazing performance. Not having enough time can be a gift. It forces you to find a way to do your most important work first.

Monday Morning Barometer

Weekends rock in our household. We sleep in and whoever sleeps the latest is the winner – we’re trying to convince my daughter that sleeping late is a good thing. There’s time for pancakes for breakfast and cozying up in a sleeping bag with a movie in the middle of the day. Regular rules fly out the window and everything seems to slow down. And then Monday comes.
