Leading Through Learning

Being a leader is much more than organizing resources, executing on plans or knowing where to squeeze out the latest profit. A person responsible for positional leadership has the arduous task of managing their team’s contribution to overall profits and sustainability while supporting the roles and individual needs of their employees. If you’re doing it well, it shouldn’t be easy.

This is How a Leader Takes a Vacation

Days, weeks, and months of leading a team can prove to be very exhausting. People are always asking things of you and while you love to give, the cycle of take-take-take can leave your well running dry.

A vacation is a great way to break out of that cycle and refresh your attitude. Think back to your last vacation. Did you feel relaxed, joyful, fulfilled? Did you gain a fresh perspective and perhaps return to work with an ignited flame of creativity?

$&#% Loyalty

[Editor’s Note: Many of our Women of HR writers also maintain their own blogs.  Please enjoy this post from Kimberly Patterson, originally posted on Unconventional HR.]   When I hear folks speak about how proud they are to be a loyal employee I want to cringe.  Be loyal to yourself, your partner, close friends, family […]

Nurturing the 80%

There’s so much on the blogosphere about how to motivate and retain your High Potential employees and top performers. This is great because you do want to retain the lot of them if you want to maintain and increase your competitive edge.

I was poking around on an HR message board the other day and happened upon a discussion regarding a recently promoted manager who is ‘struggling’ in her new role. In her explanation the HR lady posting about the situation stated: “…we believe she needs to ‘come over to our side.’”

Tips to Grow Exponentially in Your Job, Ladies!

Even highly skilled and hardworking ladies face these kinds of career hitches time and again. Why? Because women suffer from some visceral averseness that hamper their career growth in many ways.

Here are my tips that may help you improve your work efficiency and let you experience exponential growth at your workplace.

The Value of Tactile Learning in the Workplace

There are countless articles out there focusing on the value of experiential learning for adults and the workplace. Tactile learning is of significant value to most adults and is a great form of experiential learning. My life revolves around a computer and it is an important part about how I interact in the working world, however I think my skills are better because there was a time when I had to figure things out without it. Our workforce has lost skills or capabilities because we discourage manual learning and miss out on great opportunities to more broadly apply what can arguably be a deeper skill set.

CEO For a Day: Career Conversations People Want

Women of HR were asked, “If you were CEO for a day, what would (or did) you focus on to improve an organization’s productivity, employee engagement or ability to recruit?” This is the third post in the series of responses.

It’s a rare organization that doesn’t somewhere in its mission statement or values express a sentiment similar to “people are at the core of our business success.“ It’s an even rarer one that actually acts on it. If I were bestowed the mantle of CEO, I’d make it my #1 priority to be part of that very rare group…. and I’d have my work cut out for me.
