The fact is, women apologize far more often than men. And we apologize for different reasons, often to convey sympathy rather than responsibility. Care less. Apologize less. Or at least count the number of times you say, “I’m sorry,” compared to your male peers. Let people take responsibilities for their own mistakes. It won’t kill them.
These days, the Peanuts character Lucy is a bully and they’re not going to allow it anymore. At least, that’s the deal according to the administrators at my kids’ school system, who ditched the time-honored tradition of watching It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown in the elementary schools during their Halloween parties because “Lucy is a bully.”
Employers need to be allowed to determine what works best for their work environment, organization and industry when it comes to crafting paid leave policies and flexible work arrangements realizing that there are some widely differing views of what that means.
When I was a Human Resources Assistant, my manager always wore heels and a well-rotated collection of suits. She was also extremely professional, action-orientated and a confident public speaker i.e. everything I wasn’t at the time. So I quickly followed her lead and purchased one pair of black, brown & nude heels. I didn’t instantly soak up the demeanor and skills of my manager through those pointy tipped shoes, but I noticed a difference in my performance.
